Brazilian authorities have simulated security operations for the Olympics opening ceremony, which will take place in the Maracana Soccer Stadium in Rio de Janeiro on August 5.
A total of 350 security agents from municipal, state and federal bodies participated in simulations in several zones throughout the city.
The Federal Police Director for Mega Events, Felipe Seixas, explained to Reuters the complications of the operation.
“It is a very complex operation because of the high numbers (of people) each of the clients have. We expect 11,000 athletes, 10,000 members of the Olympic family, 8,000 sponsors; so, it is so many people with exclusive passes, exclusive locations, that some kind of special attention is needed and we need an operation that is perfectly timed.”
Security operations for the Games will begin on July 5, with a total of 85,000 officials involved, including 47,000 public security agents and 38,000 military personnel.
The 11,000 athletes who will be present in the opening ceremony will be protected by private security guards.
